In bid to revive the traditional Indian art and art forms, P N Gadgil & Sons & Warsa with Intach, (Pune) is organizing Chau Mask Craft workshop on 2nd July 2016. Bhim Sutradhar a chau mask artisan will be teaching how to make Masks. Participants can take home two masks – one made and painted by themselves and the other made by the artisan. These masks are typically used in a very popular chau form of dance from West Bengal, Jharkhand and Orissa.
Paper, mud and clay are used to make the masks and are then painted in pastel shades. The effectiveness, originality and beauty of the Chau dance is dependent on the Chau masks and to represent a character from the mythology. The eye-brows, mouth and eyes are painted to give those special effects and to complete the look of the dancers.
